Building Capacity for Literacy in K-12 Science

The overarching mission of the Vermont Science Initiative (VSI) is to achieve high levels of student learning in science. To attain this goal, the VSI involves teachers in high quality training and learning experiences that will provide Vermont with:

  • A cadre of K-8 classroom teachers with sound instruction in standards-based science, integrating content, inquiry, and continuous assessment.
  • A cohort of K-8 teacher leaders who will deliver professional development to their colleagues.
  • A high quality teaching of science that will spread from school through districts, with students demonstrating an improved learning of science accompanied with a deepening of critical thinking skills.

“I know that for me time is the biggest commodity in my professional life. I am always trying to find more time to think deeply about what I am teaching and to discuss ideas with my colleagues. VSI provided the time, a fantastic group of colleagues from around the state with whom I could collaborate, and a wide range of instructors who were willing to work and accommodate with the group. The end result was us all focusing together for three years on science education--a truly unique experience.” - Amy Clapp, VSI graduate
