Goals of the VSI

The goals of the VSI align with the Vermont Framework and Learning Opportunities (VTDOE, 2000), the National Teaching Standards and Standards of Professional Development established by the National Research Council (NRC, 1996), and the recommendations of the National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century (GCR, 2000). The primary goals of this partnership are:

  • To involve teachers in high quality training and learning experiences in science that will directly impact their content knowledge and ability to deliver content via sound, research-based pedagogy; to evaluate student learning through valid local assessments; and to translate this knowledge into high levels of student learning.
  • To foster and develop school support systems that are rich with learning opportunities for students and teachers.
  • To assist partnering schools/districts in the use of valid and reliable ongoing assessments to continually improve the learning of science for all students.
  • To ensure a local capacity for science leadership by coupling instruction in leadership for the VSI teacher (Tier 1) with support of the school administrator.
